There has been much discussion about how to mark up a crossword in HTML. An important thing to remember is that crosswords are tabular data, and hence the use of tables for ‘layout’ is entirely appropriate — a little CSS does the rest. The crossword below shows the general principle - the stylesheet is in the <head> section of the page. Purists might object to the class ‘black’, but it can be argued that it is logical not presentational, as black squares do have semantic meaning.
The first person to complete the crossword and to contact me will have their name mentioned here. Please don’t ask me to explain the clues - if you’re not familiar with cryptic crosswords, several books on the subject are available.
