Free Map Of Torquay

The following map of Torquay (and the larger version accessible through the link below it) is free in all senses of the word. It has been released into the public domain by its author and may by freely used for any purpose, changed in any way, and redistributed as you wish.

The map covers the following areas:

  • Torquay, including Barton, Watcombe, The Willows, Combe Pafford, Edginswell, Hele, St Marychurch, Shiphay, Torre, Upton, Plainmoor, Ellacombe, Babbacombe, Chelston, Wellswood, and Livermead
  • Daccombe
  • North Whilborough
  • Cockington
  • Parts of Kingskerswell, Maidencombe, Compton, Marldon, and Paignton (Hollicombe, and parts of Shorton and Preston)

How the map was made

The basis for the map was the out-of-copyright Ordnance Survey New Popular Edition map. This map can be explored for free at the npemap.org.uk website. The New Popular Edition map is now over fifty years old, and large parts of Torquay (particularly in Shiphay, Barton, and Watcombe, and at The Willows) had not been developed at that time. Newer roads were added to the map based on geographical features present in the New Popular Edition map. This does mean that the position of these newer roads may be slightly inaccurate, but such inaccuracies should not be more than a few pixels, making the map sufficiently accurate for most purposes.

Necessary legal details

The author of the map, Safalra (Stephen Morley), irrevocably releases all rights to the map, with the intention of it becoming part of the public domain. Because the map is released into the public domain, it comes with no warranty either expressed or implied, to the extent permitted by law.

Informally, this means that you may use, change and redistribute the map without restriction (although attribution is appreciated), but in doing so the author will not be held responsible for any consequences of usage of the map.
